Hepatitis – Liver Inflammation

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. It can be acute or chronic and have various causes. The most well-known are viral hepatitis types A, B, C, D, and E.

However, hepatitis can also be triggered by medications, alcohol, metabolic disorders, autoimmune diseases, or other causes.

What are the causes?

Important forms include:

• Hepatitis A – usually an acute viral infection

• Hepatitis B – can be acute or chronic

• Hepatitis C – can become chronic without treatment

• Hepatitis D – only occurs in conjunction with a Hepatitis B infection

• Hepatitis E – usually acute, but severe or chronic in certain patients

• Autoimmune hepatitis

• Medication-induced or toxic hepatitis

• Alcohol-related hepatitis

• Other inflammatory liver diseases

What symptoms can occur?

Hepatitis can initially be completely asymptomatic. Possible symptoms include:

• Fatigue and exhaustion

• Loss of appetite

• Nausea and vomiting

• Pressure or pain in the upper right abdomen

• Fever

• Joint and muscle pain

• Jaundice (icterus)

• Dark urine

• Pale or discolored stools

• Itching

Chronic Hepatitis B and C infections, in particular, can remain undetected for a long time.

Acute and Chronic Hepatitis

Acute hepatitis can heal completely. However, some forms can become chronic.

A prolonged chronic liver inflammation can lead to increasing scarring:

chronic hepatitis → liver fibrosis → liver cirrhosis

In advanced liver cirrhosis, the risk of liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), among other things, increases.

Viral Hepatitis – Transmission

The transmission routes differ:

• Hepatitis A and E mainly through contaminated food or water

• Hepatitis B through blood and other bodily fluids

• Hepatitis C mainly through blood

• Hepatitis D only when Hepatitis B is also present

Effective vaccinations are available against Hepatitis A and B. The Hepatitis B vaccination therefore also protects against Hepatitis D.

Diagnosis

Clarification may include:

• Liver values, especially ALT/GPT and AST/GOT

• Bilirubin

• Coagulation values

• Specific antibody and antigen tests

• PCR for direct virus detection or determination of viral load

• Ultrasound of the liver

• If necessary, elastography to assess liver fibrosis

• Further investigations to clarify non-infectious causes

The exact type of hepatitis should be determined, as treatment and course differ significantly.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause.

For Hepatitis A, supportive treatment is usually sufficient. Chronic Hepatitis B can be controlled with antiviral medications.

Hepatitis C is now curable in most cases with direct-acting antiviral medications.

Autoimmune hepatitis, on the other hand, requires immunosuppressive treatment. In cases of medication-induced or toxic hepatitis, the trigger must be identified and treated or avoided accordingly.

In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for various liver and digestive complaints according to the Banerji protocols.

Reliable elimination of hepatitis viruses, control of autoimmune hepatitis, or prevention of liver fibrosis, liver cirrhosis, and liver cancer through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Therefore, necessary antiviral, immunomodulatory, or other medical treatment should not be replaced or delayed.

Important Note

Newly appearing jaundice, pronounced fatigue with vomiting, increasing drowsiness or confusion, bleeding tendency, a rapidly increasing abdominal circumference, or very dark urine with pale stools should be medically evaluated promptly.

If viral hepatitis is suspected, determining the exact virus type is important, as the risk of infection, course, and treatment differ significantly.
