Pulmonary Emphysema – Hyperinflation and Damage to the Alveoli
Pulmonary emphysema is a chronic condition in which the delicate air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs become permanently damaged and overly distended. The walls between the air sacs are partially destroyed, leading to a reduction in the surface area of the lungs available for oxygen exchange.
Pulmonary emphysema often occurs as part of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The structural changes that have already occurred in the lung tissue are generally irreversible.
What happens in pulmonary emphysema?
Healthy alveoli are elastic and aid exhalation. In emphysema, some of this elasticity is lost. Small airways can collapse more easily during exhalation, trapping air in the lungs.
This leads to increasing hyperinflation of the lungs and impaired gas exchange.
How does pulmonary emphysema develop?
The most common cause is long-term exposure to tobacco smoke.
Other potential causes and risk factors include:
-
COPD
-
long-term occupational exposure to dust, fumes, or pollutants
-
air pollution
-
rarely, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetically inherited condition
-
other chronic damage to lung tissue
What symptoms can occur?
Typical symptoms include:
-
increasing shortness of breath
-
initially, shortness of breath during physical exertion
-
later, possibly shortness of breath even with minimal exertion or at rest
-
prolonged and difficult exhalation
-
reduced physical performance
-
cough
-
sometimes sputum production
-
wheezing or whistling breath
-
fatigue and exhaustion
In advanced stages of the disease, oxygen deficiency, weight loss, and a significant reduction in physical capacity can occur.
Pulmonary Emphysema and COPD
Emphysema is often a component of COPD, but not every COPD patient has an equally severe emphysema.
In COPD, chronic narrowing and inflammation of the airways are paramount. In emphysema, the destruction of the alveoli and hyperinflation of the lung tissue are particularly characteristic.
Diagnosis
Diagnostic procedures may include, among others:
-
pulmonary function test
-
measurement of oxygen saturation
-
arterial blood gas analysis
-
computed tomography (CT) of the lungs
-
if necessary, X-ray examination
-
if suspected, testing for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
Treatment
Already damaged lung tissue cannot usually be restored. The aim of treatment is therefore to slow progression as much as possible, reduce symptoms, and maintain existing lung function optimally.
Depending on the findings, options include:
-
consistent smoking cessation
-
bronchodilator inhalers
-
regular physical activity and pulmonary rehabilitation
-
respiratory physiotherapy
-
recommended vaccinations
-
treatment of COPD exacerbations and respiratory infections
-
in cases of chronic oxygen deficiency, long-term oxygen therapy if necessary
-
lung volume reduction procedures for selected patients
-
in very advanced cases, lung transplantation
Consider Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
Particularly in cases of emphysema at a younger age, in non-smokers, or with a family history, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency should be considered. This can be detected by a blood test.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for various disease and symptom patterns, following the Banerji protocols.
The restoration of already destroyed alveoli or reliable treatment of pulmonary emphysema through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Necessary pneumological treatment and prescribed inhalation therapy should therefore not be replaced or discontinued independently.
Important Note
A sudden significant increase in shortness of breath, severe chest pain, bluish lips, disturbances of consciousness, or a rapid worsening of breathing must be medically evaluated immediately.
