Huntington's Disease – Hereditary Nervous System Disorder

Huntington's disease, also known as Huntington's chorea, is a rare, progressive, and hereditary disorder of the central nervous system. It involves the progressive damage of certain nerve cells in the brain. The disease can cause movement disorders, as well as changes in cognitive abilities and behavior.

How does Huntington's disease develop?

The cause is a change in the so-called HTT gene. The disease is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. This means that children of an affected parent generally have a 50 percent chance of inheriting the disease-causing gene mutation.

The genetic change leads to the formation of an altered huntingtin protein. Over time, this affects certain nerve cells, particularly in brain regions important for movement, thought, and behavior.

What symptoms can occur?

The symptoms usually develop gradually and can vary greatly individually. Typical symptoms include:

• involuntary, excessive movements (chorea)

• coordination and balance disorders

• difficulty walking

• speech and swallowing disorders

• concentration and memory disorders

• increasing impairment of cognitive performance

• changes in mood, drive, and behavior

Course and Treatment

Huntington's disease progresses over the years. A cure is currently not possible. However, various medications and supportive measures can be used to alleviate individual symptoms and maintain independence for as long as possible.

Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, as well as neurological and possibly psychiatric care can be important components of treatment.

In cases of familial occurrence of Huntington's disease, human genetic counseling may be advisable. A genetic test, due to its far-reaching personal and familial significance, should be accompanied by a specialist physician.
