Gonorrhea – Sexually Transmitted Bacterial Infection Caused by Neisseria Gonorrhoeae
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria Gonorrhoeae (gonococci).
The infection can affect the urethra, cervix, rectum, throat, and eyes. Many infections cause only mild or no symptoms. Infected individuals can therefore transmit the pathogens without knowing they are infected.
Transmission
Gonococci are mainly transmitted through unprotected sexual contact.
Possible transmission routes include:
-
vaginal intercourse
-
anal intercourse
-
oral sex
-
contact with infectious genital secretions
-
transmission from mother to newborn during childbirth
An infection can occur at multiple body sites simultaneously.
Gonorrhea in Men
In case of urethral infection, typical symptoms may occur:
-
severe burning during urination
-
purulent or yellowish-green discharge from the urethra
-
redness of the urethral opening
-
frequent urge to urinate
-
pain or pressure sensation
-
occasionally pain or swelling in the testicles or epididymis
However, an infection can also be asymptomatic or have mild symptoms in men.
Gonorrhea in Women
In women, a gonococcal infection is particularly often without clear symptoms.
Possible symptoms include:
-
increased or altered vaginal discharge
-
burning during urination
-
intermenstrual bleeding
-
bleeding after sexual intercourse
-
lower abdominal pain
-
pain during sexual intercourse
As a result, the disease can remain unnoticed for a longer period.
Throat Gonorrhea
Pharyngeal gonorrhea often occurs after oral sex.
It often causes no symptoms. Possible symptoms include:
-
sore throat
-
redness of the throat
-
difficulty swallowing
-
swollen lymph nodes
Throat gonorrhea is also significant with regard to the emergence and transmission of antibiotic-resistant gonococci.
Rectal Gonorrhea
An infection of the rectum can be asymptomatic or cause symptoms such as:
-
itching
-
pain
-
mucus or pus discharge
-
bleeding
-
pain during defecation
Ascending Infection in Women
Gonococci can ascend from the cervix into the upper genital organs and cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).
Affected areas can include:
-
uterus
-
fallopian tubes
-
surrounding tissue
Possible consequences include:
-
chronic lower abdominal pain
-
scarring of the fallopian tubes
-
reduced fertility or infertility
-
increased risk of ectopic pregnancy
Early diagnosis and treatment are therefore important.
Complications in Men
In men, the infection can spread to the epididymis, among other places, and cause epididymitis.
Severe unilateral testicular pain or sudden testicular swelling requires prompt medical clarification, as other acute conditions such as testicular torsion must also be ruled out.
Disseminated Gonococcal Infection
Rarely, gonococci can enter other body regions via the bloodstream.
Such a disseminated gonococcal infection can cause, among other things:
-
fever
-
skin changes
-
joint pain
-
tendosynovitis
-
purulent arthritis
In rare cases, further severe organ infections can occur.
Gonorrhea of the Eye
If gonococci enter the eye, a severe purulent conjunctivitis can develop.
Untreated, the cornea can be damaged. A gonococcal eye infection therefore urgently requires treatment.
In newborns, an infection during childbirth can lead to a severe eye infection.
Diagnosis
Detection is often carried out today using molecular biological methods such as Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAAT/PCR).
Depending on sexual exposure, samples or swabs may be required from:
-
urine or urethra
-
vagina or cervix
-
throat
-
rectum
In certain situations, a gonococcal culture with resistance testing is also important.
Antibiotic Resistance
An increasing medical problem is antibiotic-resistant gonococci.
Neisseria Gonorrhoeae has developed resistance to various groups of antibiotics over time. Therefore, treatment should be carried out according to the current medical recommendations.
If symptoms persist after therapy, one must consider, among other things:
-
treatment failure
-
antibiotic resistance
-
re-infection
-
additional sexually transmitted infections
Treatment
Gonorrhea is treated with appropriate antibiotics. The specific therapy depends on current guidelines, resistance data, infection sites, and individual factors.
Treatment should be carried out completely according to the doctor's prescription.
Sexual Partners and Re-infection
Successful treatment does not protect against re-infection.
Sexual partners must be informed, examined, and, if necessary, treated according to medical recommendations.
Until treatment is completed and there is no longer a relevant risk of transmission, sexual contact should be avoided according to medical advice.
Other Sexually Transmitted Infections
In case of diagnosed gonorrhea, depending on the individual situation, testing for other sexually transmitted infections should also be considered, especially:
-
chlamydia
-
syphilis
-
HIV
-
Hepatitis B and possibly Hepatitis C
Multiple infections can be present simultaneously.
Prevention
The risk of gonorrhea can be reduced particularly by the consistent use of condoms or suitable barrier methods.
For multiple sexual partners or increased exposure risk, regular STI screenings may be advisable.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for various complaints of the urogenital area and infectious conditions.
A reliable eradication of Neisseria Gonorrhoeae or cure of gonorrhea through homeopathic remedies has not been scientifically proven.
Untreated gonorrhea can lead to serious complications and can continue to be transmitted to other people. Therefore, necessary antibiotic treatment must not be replaced or delayed by homeopathic remedies.
Important Note
If gonorrhea is suspected, a medical examination with targeted pathogen detection should be performed. This also applies in the absence of symptoms after relevant risk contact.
In cases of severe lower abdominal pain, fever, severe testicular or epididymal pain, joint swelling, pronounced malaise, or a possible gonococcal eye infection, rapid medical clarification is required.
