Guillain-Barré Syndrome – Acute Inflammatory Disease of the Peripheral Nerves

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is also referred to as Guillain-Barré Syndrome in German. A descriptive German term is akute entzündliche Polyneuropathie (acute inflammatory polyneuropathy). The most common form is acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP).

It is a rare, acutely occurring disease of the peripheral nervous system. The immune system mistakenly attacks components of the nerves. This disrupts the transmission of nerve signals and can lead to muscle weakness, sensory disturbances, and paralysis.

How does Guillain-Barré Syndrome develop?

The disease often develops a few days or weeks after a respiratory or gastrointestinal infection. A misguided immune reaction attacks components of the peripheral nerves or their protective myelin sheaths.

In some affected individuals, no clear trigger can be identified.

What symptoms can occur?

Initially, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the legs are typical. The symptoms can intensify quickly and spread upwards.

Possible symptoms include:

• Tingling and numbness

• Muscle weakness

• Increasing paralysis

• Reduced or absent muscle reflexes

• Difficulty walking

• Pain and paresthesia

• Facial muscle paralysis

• Swallowing and speech disorders

• In severe cases, respiratory paralysis

• Disruptions of blood pressure and heart rate

Diagnosis and Treatment

Guillain-Barré Syndrome requires a rapid neurological assessment and is usually treated in a hospital. Treatment primarily involves intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) or plasmapheresis (plasma exchange).

Many affected individuals recover largely or completely. However, recovery can take several months or longer.

Important Note

Guillain-Barré Syndrome can worsen rapidly and become life-threatening if the respiratory muscles are affected. Newly appearing or rapidly increasing muscle weakness and paralysis must be immediately medically evaluated.
