Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) – Benign Enlargement of the Prostate
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a benign enlargement or tissue proliferation of the prostate (prostate gland). It occurs primarily with increasing age and is not a cancerous condition.
Since the prostate surrounds the urethra directly below the bladder, increasing enlargement can obstruct urine flow and cause typical urination problems.
How does prostatic hyperplasia develop?
The exact cause is not fully understood. Age-related hormonal changes play an important role, particularly the effect of androgens like dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on prostate tissue.
With increasing age, the tissue, especially around the urethra, can grow and progressively narrow it.
What symptoms can occur?
Typical symptoms include:
-
frequent urination
-
nocturnal urination (nocturia)
-
sudden, strong urge to urinate
-
delayed onset of urination
-
weak or interrupted urine stream
-
prolonged urination
-
post-void dribbling
-
feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
-
straining during urination
These symptoms are also referred to as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).
What complications can arise?
With a more severe outflow obstruction, increasing residual urine can remain in the bladder. Possible consequences include:
-
recurrent urinary tract infections
-
bladder stones
-
increasing residual urine formation
-
acute urinary retention
-
damage to the bladder
-
impairment of kidney function in cases of severe outflow obstruction
Prostatic Hyperplasia and Prostate Cancer
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is not synonymous with prostate cancer. However, both conditions can occur independently and sometimes cause similar symptoms.
Therefore, new or worsening urination problems should be evaluated by a urologist.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Depending on the situation, clarification includes a urological examination, urinalysis, ultrasound, and measurement of residual urine. The PSA value can also be determined, taking into account age, prostate size, and other factors.
Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and the extent of the outflow obstruction. Possible options include:
-
regular check-ups for mild symptoms
-
medical treatment, for example, with alpha-blockers
-
medications to reduce prostate size, for example, 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors
-
various minimally invasive or surgical procedures
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for various disease and symptom patterns.
A reliable reduction of benign prostatic hyperplasia or the elimination of severe urinary outflow obstruction through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Necessary urological diagnostics and treatment should therefore not be replaced or delayed.
Important note
If no urination is possible at all, even though the bladder is full, acute urinary retention may be present. This requires immediate medical treatment.
