Myopia progressiva – progressive myopia

Myopia progressiva, also known as progressive myopia, is a form of short-sightedness where the refractive error gradually worsens over time. Those affected can usually see nearby objects well, while distant objects appear blurry.

Progressive myopia often begins in childhood or adolescence and can intensify during growth.

How does myopia develop?

In myopia, the eyeball is usually too long in relation to the eye's refractive power. As a result, incoming light rays are focused in front of the retina, rather than directly on it. This makes distant objects appear blurry.

In progressive myopia, the length of the eyeball (axial length) particularly increases, which can worsen the short-sightedness.

What symptoms can occur?

Typical complaints include:

• blurry distance vision

• difficulty recognising street signs or distant objects

• frequent squinting

• problems with vision at school, work, or in traffic

• sometimes headaches or eye strain

• frequently needing to adjust glasses or contact lens prescriptions

Why should progressive myopia be monitored?

A stronger or high myopia is not just a refractive error. The increasing lengthening of the eyeball can lead to changes in the retina and other eye structures.

With high myopia, the risk increases for, among other things:

• retinal changes and retinal detachment

• myopic maculopathy

• glaucoma

• earlier development of cataracts

• permanent impairment of vision

Diagnosis and Treatment

Regular ophthalmological examinations are particularly important for children and adolescents with increasing short-sightedness. In addition to determining visual acuity, the axial length of the eye can also be monitored.

Existing myopia can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. For children and adolescents, various myopia control methods are also available that can slow down the progression of short-sightedness. These include special spectacle lenses or contact lenses, as well as low-dose atropine, depending on the individual findings.

Regular outdoor exposure and activity can also positively influence the risk of developing or progressing myopia in children.

In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for various disease patterns and symptoms, following the Banerji protocols.

A shortening of an elongated eyeball or a reliable halt to progressive myopia through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Ophthalmological check-ups and medically recommended myopia control measures should therefore not be replaced or delayed.

Important note

Rapidly increasing myopia should be checked by an ophthalmologist. If sudden flashes of light, numerous new black spots, "soot showers," shadows, or a curtain in the field of vision appear, an immediate ophthalmological examination is necessary, as this may indicate a retinal tear or detachment.
