Facial Paralysis – Facial Paresis (Facial Nerve)

Facial paresis, also known as facial paralysis or Bell's palsy, is a partial or complete paralysis of the facial muscles. It is caused by a dysfunction or damage to the facial nerve (VII cranial nerve), which controls a large part of the facial mimetic muscles.

The paralysis often affects one side of the face and can occur suddenly or gradually, depending on the cause.

How does facial paresis develop?

Basically, a distinction is made between peripheral and central facial paresis.

In peripheral facial paresis, the facial nerve itself is affected. Often, no clear cause can be determined; this is then referred to as idiopathic facial paresis (Bell's palsy). Other possible causes include infections, inflammations, injuries, or diseases in the area of the nerve.

In central facial paresis, the damage is located in the brain. It can occur, for example, in connection with a stroke or other neurological diseases.

What symptoms can occur?

Typical symptoms include:

• drooping corner of the mouth on one side

• difficulty smiling or making other mimetic movements

• incomplete eyelid closure

• reduced forehead movement in peripheral facial paresis

• changes in taste sensation

• increased or decreased tear production

• increased sensitivity to noise on the affected side

• difficulty speaking, eating, or drinking

Course and Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause of the facial paresis. In idiopathic facial paresis, the prognosis is often favorable, and many affected individuals recover within weeks to months. In cases of incomplete eyelid closure, it is particularly important to protect the eye from dryness and injury.

Sudden Facial Paralysis Requires Medical Evaluation

A sudden onset of facial paralysis should be medically evaluated immediately, as a stroke could also be the cause. If speech disorders, paralysis of an arm or leg, visual disturbances, dizziness, or other sudden neurological symptoms also occur, immediate medical help is required.
