Fibrocystic mastopathy refers to benign changes in female breast tissue, often influenced by hormonal fluctuations. Typical symptoms include nodular or hardened areas, small or larger cysts, as well as feelings of tension and pain in the breast.

These changes occur particularly often during the hormonally active phase of life and can change significantly over the course of the menstrual cycle.

How does fibrocystic mastopathy develop?

The exact cause is not fully understood. Hormonal influences on breast tissue play an important role, especially fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone.

This can lead to changes in connective and glandular tissue and the formation of fluid-filled cysts. Symptoms often worsen in the second half of the menstrual cycle and improve after the onset of menstruation.

What symptoms can occur?

Typical symptoms include:

• Feeling of tension in the breasts

• Pain or tenderness

• Nodular or hardened areas

• Palpable cysts

• Swelling of the breast

• Cycle-dependent increase in symptoms

• Partial discharge from the nipple

Often, both breasts are affected.

Are fibrocystic changes dangerous?

Most fibrocystic changes are benign and not breast cancer. However, new lumps or other changes in the breast should still be examined, as it is not always possible to determine with certainty what kind of change it is based on the palpation finding alone.

Certain rarer tissue changes can be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer and require appropriate medical monitoring.

Diagnosis and Treatment

In addition to palpation, ultrasound and mammography can be used for clarification. In cases of unclear findings, further examinations or a tissue sample may be necessary.

For mild symptoms, no special treatment is often necessary. For severe pain or larger cysts, therapy depends on the individual findings. Larger painful cysts can be punctured if necessary.
