Epilepsy – A brain disorder with recurrent epileptic seizures

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by a persistent predisposition to epileptic seizures. Therefore, a single epileptic seizure does not automatically mean that epilepsy is present.

Epileptic seizures result from a temporary disruption of the electrical activity of nerve cells in the brain. Depending on which areas of the brain are affected, the seizures can manifest very differently.

How does epilepsy develop?

Epilepsy can have various causes. These include, among others, genetic factors, changes or damage to the brain, strokes, brain injuries, tumors, infections, or developmental disorders. In some cases, no clear cause can be identified.

What symptoms can occur?

Not every epileptic seizure leads to the well-known severe convulsions. Possible manifestations include:

• sudden muscle jerks or seizures

• brief disturbances of consciousness or perception

• temporary absence and lack of reaction to the surroundings

• unusual sensations, smells, or visual impressions

• involuntary movements

• loss of consciousness

• confusion and exhaustion after a seizure

A distinction is made between focal seizures, which begin in a specific area of the brain, and generalized seizures, which involve both hemispheres of the brain from the outset.

Diagnosis and Treatment

In addition to the patient's medical history, neurological examinations, an EEG (electroencephalogram), and often imaging techniques such as an MRI are used for clarification.

Treatment depends on the type and cause of epilepsy. Antiepileptic medications are often used. For certain forms, other treatment options are available.

Important Note

An epileptic seizure can be a medical emergency. Immediate medical help is required in the event of a first seizure, an unusually long-lasting seizure, multiple seizures without complete recovery in between, or injuries and breathing problems.
