Paralysis – e.g., after stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, or spinal cord injury
Paralysis refers to the partial or complete loss of voluntary muscle movement. Incomplete paralysis is called paresis, and complete paralysis is called plegia.
Paralysis can occur when areas of the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves responsible for muscle control are damaged. It can affect individual muscles, a limb, one side of the body, or larger areas of the body.
How does paralysis occur?
Possible causes include, in particular:
-
Ischemic stroke: A blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked, and part of the brain is no longer adequately supplied with oxygen.
-
Cerebral hemorrhage: Blood leaks into or around the brain due to the rupture or injury of a blood vessel, which can damage nerve tissue.
-
Spinal cord injury: Injuries or diseases of the spine can affect the spinal cord running through it. Depending on the level and extent of the damage, different areas of the body may be paralyzed.
-
Traumatic brain or spinal injuries
-
Tumors or other space-occupying lesions
-
Inflammatory or other neurological diseases
-
Damage to peripheral nerves
What are the types of paralysis?
Depending on the extent and affected body region, distinctions include:
-
Paresis: incomplete paralysis or significant muscle weakness
-
Plegia: complete paralysis
-
Monoparesis/Monoplegia: one arm or one leg is affected
-
Hemiparesis/Hemiplegia: one side of the body is affected, for example, after a stroke
-
Paraparesis/Paraplegia: primarily both legs and possibly other areas below a spinal cord injury are affected
-
Tetraparesis/Tetraplegia: arms and legs are affected, for example, in case of spinal cord damage in the cervical spine region
What symptoms can occur?
In addition to limited or absent movement ability, other neurological symptoms may occur:
-
Muscle weakness
-
Increased muscle tone and spasticity
-
Numbness and sensory disturbances
-
Coordination and balance disorders
-
Impairment of fine motor skills
-
Speech or swallowing disorders in cases of brain damage
-
Bladder or bowel dysfunction in certain spinal cord injuries
Treatment and Rehabilitation
Treatment depends on the underlying cause, the location of the damage, and the extent of the paralysis. In addition to treating the underlying disease, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and rehabilitation play an important role. In cases of speech or swallowing disorders, speech therapy may also be necessary.
Suddenly occurring paralysis is a medical emergency
Suddenly occurring paralysis or muscle weakness can indicate a stroke or cerebral hemorrhage and must be medically evaluated immediately. Paralysis symptoms after a spinal injury also require immediate medical attention.
