Diarrhea / Diarrhoea – frequent loose stools
Diarrhea (diarrhoea) refers to frequent, unformed to watery bowel movements. Acute diarrhea is very common and is usually caused by gastrointestinal infections.
In many cases, acute diarrhea subsides on its own within a few days. It is crucial to avoid significant fluid and electrolyte loss.
What can cause diarrhea?
Possible causes include:
-
viral gastrointestinal infections
-
bacterial intestinal infections
-
parasites
-
spoiled or contaminated food
-
food intolerances, such as lactose intolerance
-
side effects of medication, especially antibiotics
-
stress and psychological strain
-
irritable bowel syndrome
-
ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease
-
pancreatic diseases
-
other digestive and metabolic disorders
What symptoms can occur?
Accompanying symptoms may include:
-
watery or mushy stools
-
frequent urge to defecate
-
abdominal cramps
-
bloating
-
nausea and vomiting
-
loss of appetite
-
fever
-
weakness and circulatory problems
In certain intestinal infections, mucus or blood in the stool may also occur.
Acute and chronic diarrhea
Acute diarrhea usually lasts only a few days and is often caused by infection.
If diarrhea persists for a longer period or recurs frequently, other causes may be involved. These include, for example:
-
food intolerances
-
chronic inflammatory bowel diseases
-
celiac disease
-
pancreatic diseases
-
irritable bowel syndrome
-
certain medications
-
hormonal or metabolic disorders
Long-standing diarrhea should therefore be medically investigated.
Fluid and electrolyte loss
The most important immediate danger with severe diarrhea is dehydration.
Warning signs are:
-
severe thirst
-
dry mouth
-
dizziness
-
weakness
-
little or very dark urine
-
low blood pressure
-
circulatory problems
Infants, young children, the elderly, and individuals with severe underlying diseases are particularly at risk.
Treatment
For uncomplicated acute diarrhea, the replacement of fluids and electrolytes is paramount.
Particularly suitable are:
-
adequate fluid intake
-
oral electrolyte or rehydration solutions
-
light, easily digestible food according to appetite
-
physical rest
A prolonged strict fasting is usually not necessary.
Antibiotics are not generally necessary for common acute diarrhea and are ineffective against viral infections.
Anti-diarrheal medications
Active ingredients such as loperamide can be used short-term in certain uncomplicated diarrheal diseases.
However, in cases of bloody diarrhea, high fever, or suspected invasive bacterial intestinal infection, such remedies should not be taken without medical clarification.
Diarrhea after antibiotics
Severe or prolonged diarrhea during or after antibiotic therapy should be investigated. A possible cause is an infection with Clostridioides difficile, which may require specific treatment.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, established homeopathic medicines and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for various acute and chronic complaints of the digestive tract.
Reliable treatment of a severe bacterial or parasitic infection or the replacement of significant fluid and electrolyte loss using homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Therefore, necessary medical treatment should not be replaced or delayed.
Important note
Blood in stool, high fever, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, circulatory problems, or clear signs of dehydration must be medically investigated promptly.
Prolonged or frequently recurring diarrhea should also be medically examined to determine the cause.
