Sinus Infection – Sinusitis / Rhinosinusitis

A sinus infection (sinusitis) is an inflammation of the mucous membranes in the paranasal sinuses. Since the nasal mucous membrane is usually inflamed at the same time, the medical term rhinosinusitis is often used.

The maxillary sinuses, frontal sinuses, ethmoid cells, or sphenoid sinuses can be affected. Sinusitis can occur acutely or persist over a longer period.

How does a sinus infection develop?

Acute sinusitis often develops after a viral cold. The mucous membranes swell, narrowing the natural openings of the sinuses. Secretions drain poorly, leading to pressure and pain.

Possible causes and contributing factors include:

• viral respiratory infections

• less commonly, bacterial infections

• allergies

• nasal polyps

• anatomical narrowings of the nose

• chronic inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane

• rarely, diseases of the tooth roots, especially in cases of unilateral maxillary sinusitis

What symptoms can occur?

Typical symptoms are:

• blocked nose

• difficulty breathing through the nose

• mucus or discharge from the nose

• post-nasal drip

• pressure or pain in the face

• pain in the forehead, cheeks, or between the eyes

• headaches

• reduced or absent sense of smell

• cough

• fatigue

• sometimes fever

• toothache or pressure in the upper jaw

Symptoms can worsen when bending forward.

Acute and Chronic Sinusitis

Acute rhinosinusitis often resolves within a few days to weeks. Chronic rhinosinusitis refers to symptoms that persist for longer than approximately 12 weeks.

In chronic cases, nasal polyps, allergies, or anatomical changes may play a role.

Diagnosis and Treatment

An uncomplicated acute sinusitis is usually virally induced and does not require antibiotic therapy.

Depending on the situation, the following can be used to alleviate symptoms:

• saline solutions or nasal rinses

• adequate fluid intake

• pain relievers

• decongestant nasal sprays for a short period

• corticosteroid nasal sprays for certain forms

If a bacterial infection is suspected, or in cases of severe or prolonged symptoms, a medical examination may be necessary. Antibiotics are only used if medically indicated.

Chronic Sinusitis

In cases of recurrent or chronic symptoms, an ENT examination is advisable. This may include nasal endoscopy and, if necessary, imaging tests.

Depending on the cause, medicinal treatments and, in cases of pronounced anatomical changes or polyps, surgical procedures may be considered.

A specific efficacy of homeopathic remedies for the treatment of acute or chronic sinusitis is not scientifically proven. Therefore, necessary medical or ENT treatment should not be replaced or delayed.

Severe swelling or redness around the eyes, visual disturbances, very severe headaches, neck stiffness, disturbances of consciousness, or a significantly worsened general condition can indicate rare but serious complications and must be immediately medically evaluated.
