Iritis – Inflammation of the Iris

Iritis is an inflammation of the iris of the eye. It belongs to the group of so-called uveitis, which are inflammatory diseases of the middle layer of the eye. If the ciliary body is also affected, it is referred to as iridocyclitis or anterior uveitis.

Iritis can occur suddenly or have a recurrent or chronic course. Since untreated cases can lead to complications and permanent damage to the eye, it should be clarified by an ophthalmologist.

How does Iritis develop?

The cause cannot always be clearly determined. Iritis can occur, among other things, in connection with the following factors:

• Autoimmune and inflammatory diseases

• Rheumatic diseases

• Certain infections

• Injuries or surgeries of the eye

• Other inflammatory eye diseases

In some affected individuals, the disease occurs without an identifiable cause.

What symptoms can occur?

Typical symptoms include:

• Red eye

• Eye pain

• Marked light sensitivity

• Blurred or reduced vision

• Increased tear production

• Pressure or foreign body sensation

• Sometimes a constricted or irregularly shaped pupil

The symptoms often affect only one eye, but can also occur bilaterally.

Possible Complications

Severe or recurrent inflammation can lead to adhesions of the iris to the lens (synechiae), changes in intraocular pressure, glaucoma, lens opacity, or other vision impairments, among other things.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is made by an ophthalmological examination, particularly with the aid of a slit lamp. Treatment depends on the cause and severity. Anti-inflammatory eye drops and pupil-dilating medications are often used. Further treatments may be necessary for certain causes.
