Diabetes Mellitus – Type 1 and Type 2

Diabetes mellitus (sugar disease) is a chronic metabolic disease in which blood sugar levels are persistently elevated. The cause is either a deficiency of the hormone insulin, a reduced effect of insulin, or a combination of both mechanisms.

Insulin is produced in the beta cells of the pancreas and enables the uptake of glucose from the blood into the body's cells. If there is not enough insulin or if it does not work sufficiently, the glucose concentration in the blood increases.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 1 diabetes is predominantly an autoimmune disease. The immune system destroys the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, leading to a pronounced to complete insulin deficiency.

People with type 1 diabetes therefore require continuous insulin treatment.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

In Type 2 diabetes, the body's cells initially become increasingly less responsive to insulin. This is known as insulin resistance. The pancreas initially tries to compensate for this by increasing insulin production. In the further course, insulin production may also decrease.

Genetic factors play an important role. Obesity, particularly increased fat accumulation in the abdominal area, lack of exercise, and other metabolic factors can additionally promote its development.

What symptoms can occur?

Diabetes, especially type 2, can remain unnoticed for a long time. Possible symptoms include:

• increased thirst

• frequent urination

• fatigue and reduced performance

• dry skin

• increased susceptibility to infections

• delayed wound healing

• visual disturbances

• unintended weight loss, especially with pronounced insulin deficiency

• with severely elevated blood sugar, nausea, weakness, or impaired consciousness

What can be the consequences of persistently elevated blood sugar?

In the long term, elevated blood sugar levels can damage blood vessels and nerves. Possible secondary diseases include:

• diabetic retinopathy

• kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy)

• nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy)

• diabetic foot syndrome

• coronary heart disease and heart attack

• stroke

• peripheral arterial occlusive disease

Good management of blood sugar, blood pressure, and other risk factors can significantly reduce the risk of secondary diseases.

Diagnosis and Treatment

For diagnosis, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, and, if necessary, an oral glucose tolerance test are primarily used.

Treatment depends on the type of diabetes. For type 1, insulin is essential. For type 2, an adapted diet, regular physical activity, and weight management are fundamental. Depending on the situation, blood sugar-lowering medications and/or insulin are also used.

Regular check-ups of eyes, kidneys, feet, blood pressure, and blood lipids are important to detect potential secondary diseases early.

In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for various diseases and symptoms according to the Banerji protocols.

A sufficient blood sugar-lowering effect of homeopathic remedies or a replacement of insulin or necessary antidiabetic treatment has not been scientifically proven. Especially in type 1 diabetes, insulin must under no circumstances be replaced or reduced by homeopathic treatment.
