Pressure Ulcers, Skin Ulcers, and Hemangiomas – Chronic Wounds and Benign Vascular Skin Lesions
Skin ulcers are defined as deeper defects of the skin or mucous membrane that can have various causes. A pressure ulcer (bedsore) primarily develops due to prolonged pressure and/or shearing forces on the tissue.
A hemangioma (strawberry mark), on the other hand, is a benign vascular lesion or benign vascular tumor and should be distinguished from a skin ulcer.
Pressure Ulcer – Bedsore
A pressure ulcer develops due to prolonged pressure on the tissue, often over bony prominences. The impaired blood circulation can damage the skin and deeper tissue layers.
People particularly at risk include those with:
-
restricted mobility
-
prolonged bed rest
-
wheelchair dependence
-
reduced pain or pressure sensation
-
neurological disorders
-
circulatory disorders
-
malnutrition
-
very sensitive or pre-damaged skin
Typical areas for a pressure ulcer
Most commonly affected areas are:
-
sacrum and coccyx
-
heels
-
hips
-
ankles
-
elbows
-
back of the head
-
shoulder blades
Possible signs
Depending on the severity, the following may occur:
-
persistent skin redness
-
overheating or hardening
-
pain
-
blister formation
-
open wounds
-
deep tissue defects
-
dead tissue (necrosis)
-
wound exudate
-
pus or unpleasant odor in case of infection
A pressure ulcer can extend far beyond the visible skin changes and affect muscles, tendons, or bones.
Skin Ulcers – Ulcera
Not every skin ulcer is a pressure ulcer. Chronic wounds can have different causes.
These include in particular:
-
venous circulatory disorders – venous leg ulcer
-
arterial circulatory disorders – arterial leg ulcer
-
diabetes mellitus and diabetic foot syndrome
-
pressure injuries
-
injuries
-
infections
-
inflammatory or autoimmune diseases
-
rarely malignant skin changes
Successful treatment therefore requires identifying the cause of the skin ulcer.
Treatment of Pressure Ulcers and Skin Ulcers
Depending on the cause and severity, the following may be necessary:
-
consistent pressure relief for pressure ulcers
-
regular repositioning and mobilization measures
-
professional wound care
-
suitable wound dressings
-
treatment of infections
-
removal of dead tissue, if medically indicated
-
improvement of nutritional status
-
treatment of circulatory disorders
-
for venous ulcers, possibly compression therapy after appropriate vascular diagnostics
-
optimal treatment of diabetes
For deep or poorly healing wounds, specialized wound clinics or wound care may be necessary.
Hemangioma – Strawberry Mark
A hemangioma is a benign vascular neoplasm. Infantile hemangiomas, which occur in infants, are particularly well-known.
They can:
-
appear reddish to dark red
-
be flat or raised
-
grow to different sizes
-
lie superficially or deeper in the tissue
Many infantile hemangiomas partially or largely regress on their own during childhood.
When does a hemangioma need to be treated?
Treatment may be necessary, especially if the hemangioma:
-
grows very quickly
-
affects the eyes or vision
-
affects the airways
-
hinders food intake
-
bleeds repeatedly
-
forms ulcers
-
causes pain
-
is problematic functionally or due to its location
For infantile hemangiomas requiring treatment, beta-blockers such as propranolol may be used under medical supervision.
Hemangioma and other vascular changes
Not every red or bluish vascular change is a hemangioma. Other conditions to be distinguished include vascular malformations, angiomas, and other vascular changes. In cases of unclear findings, a dermatological examination is advisable.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for various skin changes, wound complaints, and vascular changes.
Reliable healing of a pressure ulcer or chronic skin ulcer, or regression of a hemangioma, through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. In particular, necessary pressure relief, wound treatment, vascular diagnostics, or medical treatment of a hemangioma must not be replaced or delayed.
Important note
For a skin ulcer with increasing redness, warmth, swelling, severe pain, pus, unpleasant odor, black or dead tissue, or fever, prompt medical clarification is required.
A rapidly growing, heavily bleeding, or ulcerating hemangioma should also be medically evaluated.
