What are ovarian cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled cavities that form in or on the ovaries. They are among the most common benign changes in the ovaries and primarily affect women of childbearing age. Many cysts cause no symptoms and are discovered incidentally during a gynecological ultrasound examination.

Depending on the size and type of the cyst, symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, a feeling of pressure, menstrual cycle irregularities, or pain during intercourse may occur.

How do ovarian cysts develop?

Most ovarian cysts develop in connection with the normal menstrual cycle and resolve on their own within a few weeks or months. Other possible causes include:

• Hormonal changes

• Dysfunction of ovulation

• Endometriosis

• Benign tissue growths

• Rarely, other gynecological conditions

Most ovarian cysts are benign. Nevertheless, they should be regularly monitored gynecologically, especially if they cause symptoms or increase in size.
