Prostatitis – Inflammation of the Prostate and Differentiation from Prostate Carcinoma
Prostatitis refers to inflammatory diseases of the prostate (prostate gland). It can be acute or chronic and have various causes. In addition to bacterial infections, there are forms where no infection can be detected.
Prostatitis is not prostate carcinoma (prostate cancer) and is not considered a typical precursor to prostate cancer.
How does prostatitis develop?
Different forms are distinguished:
-
Acute bacterial prostatitis: usually caused by bacteria and often associated with significant symptoms and fever.
-
Chronic bacterial prostatitis: long-standing or recurrent bacterial infection of the prostate.
-
Chronic pelvic pain syndrome: discomfort in the prostate and pelvic area without a clearly detectable bacterial infection.
-
Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis: signs of inflammation are found, although no typical symptoms are present.
What symptoms can occur?
Possible symptoms include:
-
Burning or pain during urination
-
frequent or strong urge to urinate
-
difficulty urinating
-
lower abdominal or pelvic pain
-
pain in the perineum, penis, or testicles
-
pain during or after ejaculation
-
sexual dysfunction
-
in acute bacterial prostatitis, fever, chills, and a pronounced feeling of illness
Prostatitis and Prostate Cancer
Prostatitis and prostate carcinoma are different diseases. However, inflammation of the prostate can temporarily increase the PSA level, which is why an elevated PSA level does not automatically indicate prostate cancer.
Conversely, prostate carcinoma, especially in early stages, can be asymptomatic. Therefore, prostatitis treatment does not replace age and risk-appropriate urological screening or early detection.
Prevention of Prostate Cancer
There is no foolproof method that can completely prevent prostate cancer. A generally health-promoting lifestyle with regular exercise, normal body weight, non-smoking, and a balanced diet can contribute to overall health.
For early detection and individual risk assessment, urological examinations and, if necessary, PSA measurements can be used. Especially with a family history, the personal risk should be discussed with a doctor.
Diagnosis and Treatment
The treatment of prostatitis depends on its specific form. In bacterial prostatitis, antibiotics may be necessary. For chronic symptoms, further medicinal and non-medicinal measures may be considered, depending on the cause.
In case of persistent symptoms or abnormal findings, additional examinations may be necessary to rule out other prostate diseases.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic medicines and potencies are used for different disease and symptom patterns according to the Banerji protocols.
A reliable treatment of bacterial prostatitis or prevention or treatment of prostate carcinoma with homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Therefore, necessary urological diagnostics, antibiotic treatment, or cancer screening should not be replaced or delayed.
Important Note
High fever, chills, severe pain, or difficulty or inability to urinate can indicate acute bacterial prostatitis or urinary retention and require prompt medical treatment.
