Bipolar disorder – depressive and manic or euphoric phases with distinctly different symptom signatures "Support" Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji

Bipolar Disorder – Depressive and Manic or Euphoric Phases with Clearly Different Symptom Signatures

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterized by alternating depressive phases and phases with significantly elevated, irritable, or overly activated mood (mania or hypomania).

Never treat depressive and euphoric-manic phases together

The former term manic-depressive illness describes this alternation between different mood poles.

Medical differentiation is important: Bipolar disorder is not a personality disorder, but belongs to the affective disorders.

The individual phases of the illness can differ significantly in terms of mood, energy, sleep, activity, thinking, and behavior.

Depressive Phase

During a depressive episode, the following may occur:

  • persistent low mood

  • loss of interest and pleasure

  • lack of drive

  • severe exhaustion

  • social withdrawal

  • concentration problems

  • slowed thinking

  • sleep disturbances

  • early morning awakening or increased sleeping

  • changes in appetite and weight

  • feelings of guilt

  • feelings of worthlessness

  • hopelessness

  • anxiety about the future

In severe depressive episodes, suicidal thoughts or intentions may occur.

Manic or Euphoric Phase

Mania is much more than just a good mood or increased zest for life.

Typical features may include:

  • unusually elevated or euphoric mood

  • severe irritability

  • significantly increased drive

  • exceptionally high activity

  • reduced need for sleep

  • greatly increased self-confidence

  • grandiose ideas

  • strong urge to talk

  • accelerated thinking

  • racing thoughts

  • easy distractibility

  • impulsive decisions

  • excessive spending

  • risky business or financial decisions

  • increased sexual activity

  • risky behavior

Those affected sometimes perceive the manic phase as particularly productive or pleasant and do not recognize its pathological nature.

In severe mania, loss of reality, delusions, or other psychotic symptoms may occur.

Hypomania

Hypomania is similar to mania but less severe.

Possible symptoms include:

  • increased energy

  • reduced need for sleep

  • increased talkativeness

  • increased sociability

  • unusually good mood

  • increased productivity

  • greater impulsivity

Since those affected sometimes feel more capable, hypomania is not always perceived as problematic.

Bipolar I and Bipolar II Disorder

In Bipolar I disorder, at least one distinct manic episode occurs. Depressive episodes are common but not strictly necessary for a diagnosis of Bipolar I disorder.

In Bipolar II disorder, depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes occur, but no fully developed mania.

Mixed Features – Important Special Consideration

Depressive and manic symptoms are not always completely separated.

Episodes with mixed features may occur. For example, depressive mood and strong internal activation, restlessness, racing thoughts, or reduced need for sleep can coexist.

Such states can be particularly distressing and are associated with an increased risk of impulsive or self-harming behavior.

Precisely Determining the Current Phase

In bipolar disorder, it is particularly important to assess which mood pole is currently predominant.

The symptom signature of a depressive episode fundamentally differs from that of a manic or hypomanic episode.

Particular attention should be paid to:

  • mood

  • drive

  • activity

  • need for sleep

  • speed of thought

  • talkativeness

  • impulsivity

  • risk-taking behavior

  • anxiety and internal restlessness

  • psychotic symptoms

  • suicidal thoughts

  • previous course of illness

Treatment of Bipolar Disorder

Treatment depends on the current phase of the illness, the previous course, and the risk of relapse.

For long-term treatment, depending on the situation, the following may be used:

  • lithium

  • certain anticonvulsants or mood stabilizers

  • certain atypical antipsychotics

  • psychotherapy

  • psychoeducation

  • structured sleep-wake rhythm

  • relapse prevention

The choice differs depending on whether an acute mania, bipolar depression, mixed symptomatology, or a stable phase is present.

Antidepressants in Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar depression differs therapeutically from ordinary unipolar depression.

Antidepressants should not be used uncritically or independently in bipolar disorder, as they can promote manic or hypomanic activation or destabilization of the illness course in certain patients.

Therefore, medication treatment belongs under medical or psychiatric care.

Sleep as an Important Warning Sign

Changes in sleep can be an early warning sign of a new episode.

In particular, a significantly reduced need for sleep without corresponding fatigue can indicate an impending manic or hypomanic phase.

Conversely, insomnia, early awakening, or an excessive need for sleep can be part of a depressive episode.

A as stable as possible sleep-wake rhythm is therefore particularly important in bipolar disorder.

Individual Symptom Signature

Bipolar disorder can vary greatly from person to person.

Important individual characteristics include, for example:

  • duration and frequency of episodes

  • severity of depression

  • euphoria or predominant irritability during a mania

  • sleep changes

  • anxiety

  • restlessness

  • aggressiveness

  • impulsivity

  • grandiose ideas

  • psychotic symptoms

  • seasonal fluctuations

  • triggers

  • response to previous treatments

This personal symptom signature should be considered in every treatment.

Homeopathy According to Dr. Banerji

In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specified homeopathic remedies and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for various psychological and accompanying complaints.

In bipolar symptomatology, particular attention must be paid to which phase or symptom signature is currently present.

Depressive and manic-euphoric complaints represent different symptom constellations and should not be treated schematically as one and the same condition. In mixed states, particularly careful psychiatric evaluation is required.

A reliable treatment or stabilization of bipolar disorder through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Homeopathic remedies must not replace or delay necessary psychiatric treatment, mood stabilization, or relapse prevention.

Prescribed medications such as lithium, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, or antidepressants should not be discontinued or changed independently.

Important Note

In an pronounced manic phase with severe loss of control, risky behavior, psychotic symptoms, lack of sleep for an extended period, or significant self-harm or danger to others, a rapid psychiatric evaluation is required.

In a depressive phase with suicidal thoughts, suicidal intentions, or acute self-harm, immediate professional or emergency medical help is required.
