What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of the joints. In this condition, the immune system mistakenly attacks the joint lining (synovium), leading to persistent inflammation. If left untreated, this inflammation can, over time, cause damage to cartilage, bone, and joints.

Typical symptoms include:

• Joint pain

• Morning stiffness, often lasting longer than 30 minutes

• Swelling and warmth in the joints

• Restricted movement

• Fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell

Initially, the small joints of the hands and feet are usually affected; later, larger joints can also be involved.

How does Rheumatoid Arthritis develop?

The exact cause is still not fully understood. It is believed that several factors interact:

• Dysregulation of the immune system (autoimmune reaction)

• Genetic predisposition

• Environmental factors, such as smoking

• Hormonal influences

• Possibly certain infections as triggers

The disease usually progresses in flare-ups and should be treated medically at an early stage.
