Otitis externa and otitis media – inflammation and pain in the ear and ear canal
Otitis externa and otitis media are inflammatory diseases of the ear, but they affect different areas.
Otitis externa (swimmer's ear) affects the skin of the external ear canal. Otitis media (middle ear infection), on the other hand, affects the middle ear behind the eardrum. Both conditions can be accompanied by sometimes severe ear pain.
Otitis externa – inflammation of the ear canal
Ear canal inflammation often occurs when the sensitive skin in the outer ear canal is irritated or injured, and bacteria or, less commonly, fungi then multiply.
Possible triggers and contributing factors include:
-
Water in the ear canal, for example after swimming or bathing
-
Small injuries from cotton swabs or other objects
-
Frequent manipulation in the ear canal
-
Skin conditions such as eczema
-
Bacterial infections
-
Fungal infections
-
Hearing aids or earplugs
-
Moisture and warmth
Typical symptoms are:
-
Severe pain in the ear canal
-
Pain when touching or pulling on the auricle
-
Itching
-
Redness and swelling of the ear canal
-
Fluid or discharge from the ear
-
Feeling of pressure or fullness
-
Temporarily reduced hearing due to swelling
Otitis media – middle ear infection
Acute otitis media is particularly common in children and often develops in connection with a cold or an upper respiratory tract infection.
Due to a dysfunction or swelling of the Eustachian tube, the ventilation of the middle ear is impaired. Fluid can accumulate behind the eardrum and cause inflammation.
Possible symptoms include:
-
Severe ear pain
-
Feeling of pressure in the ear
-
Reduced hearing
-
Fever
-
Restlessness and irritability, especially in children
-
General malaise
-
Occasionally fluid or pus discharge from the ear if the eardrum is perforated
Diagnosis and Treatment
Treatment depends on which area of the ear is affected and what the cause is.
Bacterial otitis externa is often treated with topical ear drops. The ear canal should be kept as dry as possible during treatment.
For acute otitis media, adequate pain management and monitoring of the course are often the primary focus. Not every middle ear infection requires antibiotics. However, depending on age, severity, comorbidities, and course, antibiotic treatment may be necessary.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic medicines and potencies are used according to the Banerji protocols for various disease and symptom complexes.
Reliable treatment of bacterial ear canal or middle ear infections or the prevention of possible complications using homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Therefore, necessary medical or antibiotic treatment should not be replaced or delayed.
Important note
Severe or increasing ear pain, high fever, pus or blood from the ear, significant hearing loss, dizziness, or swelling and redness behind the ear should be promptly evaluated by a doctor.
Particular caution is required in people with diabetes or a weakened immune system who have severe ear canal inflammation, as rare severe courses may occur.
