Ischemic Stroke – What is it?

An ischemic stroke, also known as a cerebral infarction, occurs when the blood supply to an area of the brain is suddenly interrupted or severely reduced. As a result, the affected nerve cells no longer receive sufficient oxygen and nutrients and can be damaged within a short time.

How does an ischemic stroke occur?

The most common cause is the blockage of a blood vessel in the brain by a blood clot. This can either form directly in an already narrowed vessel (thrombosis) or travel from another part of the body – for example, from the heart – into a cerebral vessel (embolism).

Important risk factors include high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, atrial fibrillation, diabetes mellitus, elevated blood lipid levels, and smoking.

What symptoms can occur?

Typical signs usually appear suddenly. These include, in particular:

• Paralysis or numbness, often on one side of the body

• Drooping corner of the mouth

• Speech or comprehension difficulties

• Vision disturbances

• Dizziness and balance problems

• Coordination problems

A stroke is a medical emergency

If a stroke is suspected, medical help must be sought immediately. The sooner treatment begins, the greater the chance of limiting permanent damage.
