Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – Compression of the Median Nerve at the Wrist
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) results from compression of the median nerve in the wrist area. The nerve runs along with several flexor tendons through the carpal tunnel, an anatomically narrow canal on the inside of the wrist.
If the nerve is compressed there for an extended period, tingling, numbness, pain, and later also loss of strength in the hand can occur.
What are the typical symptoms?
Typical symptoms include:
-
Tingling and "pins and needles" sensation in the hand
-
Numbness
-
Pain in the hand and fingers
-
Hands falling asleep at night
-
Nightly pain that leads to waking up
-
Radiation of symptoms into the forearm or arm
-
Decreased grip strength
-
Difficulty holding small objects
Most affected are the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and the thumb-side half of the ring finger. The little finger is usually not affected in classic carpal tunnel syndrome.
Symptoms particularly at night
A characteristic feature is an exacerbation of symptoms at night or in the early morning. Many sufferers try to alleviate the symptoms by shaking or moving their hand.
Prolonged bending of the wrist can also worsen the symptoms.
How does carpal tunnel syndrome develop?
Often, no single cause can be identified. Predisposing factors can include:
-
Anatomically narrow carpal tunnel
-
Repeated strenuous loading of the wrist
-
Tenosynovial changes
-
Pregnancy and fluid retention
-
Diabetes mellitus
-
Hypothyroidism
-
Rheumatoid arthritis
-
Previous wrist injuries or fractures
-
Certain metabolic disorders
Advanced Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
With prolonged severe nerve compression, permanent nerve damage can occur.
Possible signs include:
-
Persistent numbness
-
Increasing clumsiness of the hand
-
Loss of strength
-
Difficulty grasping
-
Wasting of the thenar muscles (thenar atrophy)
Pronounced muscle weakness should therefore not remain untreated for an extended period.
Diagnosis
In addition to clinical examination, nerve conduction velocity measurement (electroneurography) is particularly helpful. This can determine whether and to what extent the median nerve is affected.
Depending on the situation, an ultrasound examination may also be performed.
Treatment
For milder symptoms, conservative treatment can initially be attempted. This includes, for example:
-
Wrist splint, especially at night
-
Avoidance or adjustment of strenuous activities
-
Treatment of possible underlying diseases
-
If necessary, local corticosteroid treatment
For pronounced symptoms, significant impairment of nerve conduction, muscle weakness, or progressive nerve damage, surgical widening of the carpal tunnel may be necessary. This involves cutting the constricting carpal ligament and relieving pressure on the median nerve.
Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji
In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for various nerve and musculoskeletal complaints according to the Banerji protocols.
Reliable elimination of mechanical median nerve compression or prevention of progressive nerve damage using homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Therefore, necessary neurological or hand surgical treatment should not be replaced or delayed.
Important Note
In cases of persistent numbness, increasing loss of strength, clumsiness of the hand, or wasting of the thenar muscles, carpal tunnel syndrome should be promptly evaluated neurologically or by a hand surgeon.
