Common Cold – Flu-like Infection / Acute Upper Respiratory Infection

A common cold, often referred to as a flu-like infection, is usually a harmless infection of the upper respiratory tract caused by viruses. It mainly affects the nose, paranasal sinuses, throat, and sometimes the bronchi.

Colds are among the most common infectious diseases and occur particularly during the colder months. They are to be distinguished from the true flu (influenza).

How does a cold develop?

A cold can be caused by numerous different viruses. Common pathogens include, for example, rhinoviruses, seasonal coronaviruses, adenoviruses, and other respiratory viruses.

Transmission primarily occurs through:

• droplets and aerosols when coughing, sneezing, or speaking

• direct contact with infectious secretions

• hands and subsequent touching of the nose, mouth, or eyes

After infection, symptoms usually develop gradually.

What symptoms can occur?

Typical symptoms include:

• runny or stuffy nose

• sneezing

• scratchy throat and sore throat

• hoarseness

• cough

• headaches

• slight fever or elevated temperature

• fatigue and malaise

• muscle and body aches

• pressure in the paranasal sinuses

Cold or Flu?

A common cold often begins slowly and runs a comparatively mild course.

In contrast, influenza often begins suddenly with a pronounced feeling of illness, high fever, severe headache and body aches, and significant exhaustion.

COVID-19 and other respiratory infections can also cause cold-like symptoms.

Treatment

A common cold usually resolves on its own within a few days to about two weeks. Treatment mainly aims at alleviating symptoms.

Helpful measures may include:

• adequate fluid intake

• physical rest

• fever-reducing and pain-relieving medications as needed

• saline solutions for the nose

• decongestant nasal sprays for a short period

• appropriate measures against cough and sore throat, depending on the symptoms

Antibiotics are not effective against cold viruses and are not necessary for an uncomplicated viral cold.
