COPD – Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease / Chronic Obstructed Airways "Support" Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji

COPD – Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease / Chronic Narrowed Airways

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is a chronic lung disease in which the airways are permanently narrowed. Unlike typical asthma, the narrowing usually does not fully reverse and can progress over the years.

Characteristic symptoms include primarily chronic cough, phlegm, and increasing shortness of breath, initially often only during physical exertion.

How does COPD develop?

The most common cause is long-term exposure of the airways to tobacco smoke. Other pollutants can also cause or contribute to COPD.

Risk factors include:

  • active and long-term smoking

  • passive smoke

  • occupational exposure to dust, fumes, or chemicals

  • air pollution

  • repeated or severe respiratory tract exposures

  • rare genetic diseases such as Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency

Even people who have never smoked can develop COPD.

What happens in the lungs?

In COPD, chronic inflammation and remodeling processes occur in the airways. The bronchi can narrow and produce more mucus.

In some affected individuals, the air sacs (alveoli) are also damaged. This leads to pulmonary emphysema, where the surface area of the lungs available for gas exchange decreases.

This makes exhalation particularly difficult, and air can increasingly become trapped in the lungs.

Typical Symptoms

The classic COPD symptoms are often summarized as AHA symptoms:

  • A – Auswurf (Phlegm)

  • H – Husten (Cough)

  • A – Atemnot (Shortness of breath)

Other possible symptoms include:

  • shortness of breath during physical exertion

  • later shortness of breath even with minor exertion or at rest

  • wheezing or whistling breathing

  • chest tightness

  • frequent respiratory infections

  • reduced physical performance

  • fatigue and exhaustion

Acute Worsening – COPD Exacerbation

During an exacerbation, COPD significantly worsens within a short period. Shortness of breath, cough, and phlegm can increase. Respiratory infections are often the trigger.

Severe exacerbations can lead to significant oxygen deficiency and an acute deterioration of lung function.

Diagnosis

The most important examination for diagnosing COPD is pulmonary function testing (spirometry). This specifically examines how much air can be exhaled within a certain time.

Depending on the situation, additional examinations may be necessary:

  • measurement of oxygen saturation

  • blood gas analysis

  • X-ray or CT of the lungs

  • further pulmonary function tests

  • testing for Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency

Treatment

Existing COPD usually cannot be completely reversed. However, treatment can reduce symptoms, prevent exacerbations, and influence the progression of the disease.

Particularly important are:

  • smoking cessation

  • inhalative bronchodilator medications

  • inhalative corticosteroids in certain patients

  • regular physical activity and pulmonary rehabilitation

  • respiratory physiotherapy

  • recommended vaccinations

  • treatment of respiratory infections and exacerbations

  • if severe chronic oxygen deficiency, possibly long-term oxygen therapy

Therapy is individually adapted to symptoms, lung function, and frequency of exacerbations.

COPD and Asthma

COPD and asthma can cause similar symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing, but they are different diseases.

In asthma, airway narrowing is typically more variable and often easily reversible. In COPD, on the other hand, there is persistent airway obstruction.

Homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji

In homeopathy according to Dr. Banerji, specific homeopathic remedies and potencies are used for various disease and symptom patterns according to the Banerji protocols.

A reliable reversal of chronic airway narrowing, restoration of destroyed air sacs, or prevention of severe COPD exacerbations through homeopathic remedies is not scientifically proven. Prescribed inhalant medications and other medically necessary treatments should therefore not be replaced or independently discontinued with homeopathic treatment.

Important Note

A sudden, significantly increasing shortness of breath, bluish lips or fingers, confusion, severe exhaustion, chest pain, or a pronounced worsening of breathing can indicate a severe COPD exacerbation or another acute illness and must be medically evaluated immediately.
