What is Nicorette and what is it used for?
Nicorette belongs to a group of medicines used for smoking cessation. Nicorette contains nicotine as an active ingredient, which enters the body through the oral mucous membrane. By supplying nicotine with Nicorette, withdrawal symptoms that occur due to nicotine withdrawal are prevented or at least significantly reduced, thereby reducing the patient's urge to smoke.
These withdrawal symptoms primarily include irritability, restlessness, anxiety, increased appetite, difficulty concentrating and falling asleep, which
in many cases lead the patient to resume smoking. Nicorette serves as an aid and facilitates cessation even in difficult cases, whereby appropriate motivation, willpower, and perseverance are necessary prerequisites for any cessation program.
If you want to quit smoking or reduce cigarette consumption, Nicorette will help you and can therefore be used:
- for smoking cessation in smokers who want to quit smoking
- as an aid for smokers during certain periods when cigarette consumption is not possible or not desired (temporary abstinence)
- to reduce cigarette consumption in smokers who do not want to or cannot quit smoking.
Additional counselling and support measures can improve the success rate.
How to use Nicorette?
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as agreed with your doctor or pharmacist. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
How should you chew Nicorette gum?
The chewing method is not comparable to that of conventional chewing gum. Please proceed as follows: First, chew the gum to release nicotine. Then take a chewing break so that the nicotine is absorbed into the body. Nicotine dissolved in saliva is not effective and can cause throat irritation and hiccups.
- When you crave a cigarette, chew a piece of gum.
- As soon as you feel a strong/peppery taste or a slight burning sensation (after approx. 1 minute), take a chewing break.
- To do this, place the gum in your cheek pouch.
- After the sensations subside, start chewing again until you feel a strong/peppery taste or a slight burning sensation again.
- Then take another chewing break.
- Repeat the chewing-chewing break process for about 30 minutes.
- When the gum has lost its flavour, dispose of it carefully (e.g., you can put it back into the blister strip).
