What is Lutamax?
Lutamax is a special dietary supplement for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Its intake is recommended in all stages of AMD, including the late stages.
Lutamax contains a highly pure Tagetes extract, which contains the substances lutein and zeaxanthin in concentrated form (hereinafter both are collectively referred to as "lutein").
These essential nutrients are stored in the human retinal photoreceptor cells, where they filter high-energy, blue light. In this way, lutein protects the photoreceptor cells from light damage and acts as a "natural pair of sunglasses" for the eye.

Recommended intake:
Initial dosage: In principle, it is recommended to start taking Lutamax as soon as possible after diagnosis of AMD. For the first 3 to 6 months, one Lutamax 20mg capsule should be taken daily. The higher dosage of 20 mg allows the lutein stores to be replenished quickly and blood levels to be increased again. This means that, compared to other initial dosages, more lutein is available for incorporation into the retina.
Maintenance dosage: After the initial dosage, continuous intake of 1 Lutamax 10mg capsule daily is recommended to maintain lutein levels at the elevated level.
Note: Continuous intake of Lutamax is important, as lutein levels in the retina drop relatively quickly after discontinuing use. Therefore, the protective effect of lutein for the eye can only develop with long-term use.
