COLDAN Nasal Drops – Decongestant nasal drops for colds, common cold, and hay fever

COLDAN Nasal Drops with Naphazoline Hydrochloride are a medicinal product for the local treatment of symptoms associated with colds, rhinitis (runny nose), hay fever, and pharyngitis. They are also used as adjunctive treatment for inflammation of the frontal and maxillary sinuses, as well as to facilitate rhinoscopy, a medical examination of the nasal cavity.

The active ingredient naphazoline hydrochloride has a vasoconstrictive effect and helps to reduce swelling of the nasal mucosa. This facilitates nasal breathing and reduces the increased production of nasal secretion.

The effect begins within a few minutes of application and lasts for up to 4 hours.

COLDAN Nasal Drops are suitable for adults, adolescents aged 12 and over, and children between 6 and 12 years of age, subject to the respective dosage recommendations.

Properties and Benefits of COLDAN Nasal Drops

  • Decongestant effect: Naphazoline hydrochloride constricts the blood vessels in the nasal mucosa, thereby reducing swelling.

  • Facilitates nasal breathing: By reducing swelling of the nasal mucosa, air can flow through the nose more easily again.

  • For rhinitis and colds: For the short-term treatment of a blocked nose.

  • For hay fever: To relieve mucosal swelling associated with allergic rhinitis.

  • For pharyngitis: For local treatment within the scope of the indicated areas of application.

  • Adjunctive for sinusitis: For supportive treatment in cases of inflammation of the frontal and maxillary sinuses.

  • Reduces nasal secretion: Diminishes the increased production of nasal secretion.

  • Rapid onset of action: The decongestant effect generally begins within a few minutes.

  • Duration of effect up to 4 hours: For temporary relief of nasal breathing.

  • For preparation for rhinoscopy: Can facilitate examination of the interior of the nose.

How do COLDAN Nasal Drops work?

COLDAN Nasal Drops contain the active ingredient naphazoline hydrochloride, which belongs to the group of vasoconstrictive sympathomimetics.

In cases of colds, allergic reactions, or other irritations, the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa can become dilated. This causes the mucosa to swell and makes nasal breathing difficult.

Naphazoline causes these blood vessels to constrict. As a result, the swelling of the nasal mucosa decreases, allowing the nasal passages to become more patent again.

Additionally, the increased production of nasal secretion can be reduced.

The effect normally begins just a few minutes after application and lasts for up to 4 hours.

COLDAN Nasal Drops alleviate the symptoms of a swollen nasal mucosa, but they do not eliminate the underlying cause of a cold or allergy.

Areas of application

COLDAN Nasal Drops are used for the local symptomatic treatment of various conditions involving the nose and upper respiratory tract.

Colds and rhinitis

In cases of colds, the nasal mucosa can swell and produce increased secretions. COLDAN Nasal Drops have a decongestant effect, thereby facilitating nasal breathing.

Hay fever and allergic rhinitis

In the case of allergic reactions, such as those caused by pollen, the nasal mucosa can swell. The vasoconstrictive effect of naphazoline can temporarily reduce this swelling.

Pharyngitis

According to the stated indications, COLDAN Nasal Drops are also among the medicinal products that can be used as part of the local treatment of pharyngitis.

Inflammation of the frontal and maxillary sinuses

In cases of sinusitis, mucosal swelling can hinder the drainage of secretions. COLDAN Nasal Drops can contribute to reducing nasal mucosal swelling as part of supportive treatment.

Facilitation of rhinoscopy

During a rhinoscopy, the doctor examines the interior of the nose. Due to the decongestant effect, COLDAN can improve the view of the nasal mucosa and thereby facilitate the examination.

Dosage and recommendations for use

The dosage of COLDAN Nasal Drops depends on the patient's age.

Adults and adolescents aged 12 and over

  • 1 to 3 drops into each nostril.

  • Use 2 to a maximum of 4 times daily.

  • An interval of at least 4 hours must be maintained between applications.

  • The maximum duration of use is 7 days.

Children aged 6 to 12

  • 1 to 2 drops into each nostril.

  • Use 1 to a maximum of 3 times daily.

  • An interval of at least 4 hours must be maintained between applications.

  • The maximum duration of use is 5 days.

Children aged 2 to 6

The use of COLDAN Nasal Drops is not recommended for children in this age group.

Children under 2 years

COLDAN Nasal Drops must not be used in children under 2 years of age.

The stated dosages must not be exceeded.

Correct application of the nasal drops

COLDAN Nasal Drops are intended exclusively for use in the nose.

Step 1 – Clean the nose

Before application, the nose should be thoroughly cleaned. Blow your nose gently to remove existing nasal secretions.

Step 2 – Tilt the head back

Tilt your head slightly backward so that the drops can easily reach the nasal passages.

Step 3 – Instill the drops

Apply the recommended number of drops into one nostril. While doing so, close the other nostril with a finger and inhale gently.

Repeat the process for the other nostril.

Step 4 – Even distribution

By gently turning the head, the drops can be evenly distributed over the nasal mucosa.

Step 5 – Clean the dropper pipette

After use, the dropper pipette should be rinsed with hot water to avoid contamination of the bottle's contents.

Dry the pipette afterwards with a clean cloth.

Ensure that the dropper pipette does not come into contact with the nasal mucosa during application.

Duration of use and important notes

COLDAN Nasal Drops are intended solely for short-term use.

Adults and adolescents aged 12 and over: Treatment must not exceed 7 days.

Children between 6 and 12 years: Treatment must not exceed 5 days.

A minimum interval of 4 hours must be maintained between two applications.

If symptoms worsen or if there is no significant improvement within 72 hours (3 days), a doctor should be consulted.

A break of at least 10 days must be observed before renewed treatment with COLDAN Nasal Drops.

Why should decongestant nasal drops not be used continuously?

Prolonged or excessively frequent use of vasoconstrictive nasal drops can lead to a habituation effect.

The nasal mucosa may swell again after the effect wears off. This phenomenon is known as the rebound effect.

Continued use can result in drug-induced chronic swelling of the nasal mucosa, known as rhinitis medicamentosa.

For this reason, COLDAN Nasal Drops should only be used for the recommended duration and at the intended dosage.
